What I Learned Surfing Costa Rica

Live life! Love Life! Saver Life! JUST BE! Be in the moment! It is  never a bad day when you are your surf board!


I was so excited to fulfill my life time goal of learning to surf. Ever since I was a young boy living in Hawaii I have wanted to learn to surf.   I am now part  a very elite group of athletes.  Surfers talk in a language different than the rest. How surfing has a huge impact in their lives. On some level, it is a religion. This became very clear to me! The surfing life style is a religion. A life style, a way of viewing the word that brings life into perspective. What is really important! This attitude or view has truly changed my life. This mind set weaves in and out of both the Emotional and Intuitional Mountains.

While traveling in Costa Rica I quickly became aware of how much we have here in the United States and how much we put importance on things that really are not that important. 

 We have forgotten in this country what life is really about! What is really important! This has led to a country that takes more antidepressants, has a high abuse of narcotic prescriptions and one of the most unhealthy and obese populations in the world. 

 Costa Rica is a beautiful country. Our location was not developed.   With the average worker making $3 dollars an hour these people do not have much in material things or what we would call comforts of life. With that said, I never met someone there that did not greet me with a smile and a warm welcome. Not once did we meet someone depressed or mean or show a negative attitude toward us. Everyone so warm loving and genuinely happy! We were welcome in like family everywhere we went. 

 Now this could also be a reflection of our attitude as well. We also noted how clean everything was. The public restrooms were spotless. We Americans are pigs by the standards in we encountered.

One of our new friends we met staying at the house with us made the comment how good of friends the five us were. How we helped each other. We were kind to everyone and not in competition with each other. We would help each other and share with each other what we were learning and how to be better surfers. Truly a solid group of genuinely good friends! Brothers from another mother! Never have I smiled so much or laughed so hard!

 This caused me to reflect on why this was and what was now  evolving to be a personal paradigm shift.  This trip was the starting point of my Hero's Journey.  I just did not know at  the time where the path was going to lead me.   
So what did I learn?

1) Happiness comes from within. Not from other people. Not from material things. But deep from within your inner sole! Pure Vida! Practice Aloha! No worries! This is the foundation to a great life.

2) Live life! Love life! Love yourself!  The One and only commandment that all other commandments hang in the balance! Just think about it! If you are living by this principal "Love One another including your self", is there really any need for any other commandments? You do not hurt those you truly love! You are willing to give everything freely to those you truly love. Being a Father the love I have for my children and what I would  give to my children has not boundaries.

3) Give of yourself freely without expectations of anything in return.

4) Smile and laugh as much as physically possible!

5) Do not judge. It is not my job! Leave it to the higher power.

6) Do not exclude. Be accepting of one another. Practice “Being kind rather than being right”.

7) Listen more talk less.

8) You will never regret time spent with family friends and loved ones.

9) Ben Franklin was right “Beer (wine) is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy!”.  

 The first miracle was turning water into wine.  Celebrating a wedding! The last supper Christ served wine to his disciples.  In the Bible it talks about the second coming of Christ and how God will be serving the very best and aged wine to celebrate!  Christ was perfect.  Without sin!  There is no sin in drinking wine! Christ was teaching us in these two examples, Life is to be lived in the moment! He was teaching us life is to be shared.  In my opinion the last supper was about Christ sharing his last moments on Earth as a Man with the people that he loved the most!  If his disciples would have known what was about to go down they would have got him the heck out of there. These are the  people that brought him the most joy and pain.  The people that served him.  The people he served! He was demonstrating life is about those precious moments.  Sharing our time, our love.  Breaking Bread. Good Friends and a bottle of wine!  His last moments, spent with those he loved.  Follow the example of Christ!  Enjoy the moments!

 Never miss an opportunity to sit down at a table break bread, eat a meal, share a cold one or a glass of wine and a talk story with the one’s you love. Just like Christ did at a Wedding or the Last Supper. There is no better way to learn about each other’s life experience, grow relationships and make new friends! Live in the moment!

10) Live breath and drink in Life! Stand in Awe in what life has to offer!

11) Keep it SIMPLE!

12) Help your fellow travelers. Protect them when its needed, listen with an open mind and loving heart. Give support to those in need of your support and strength. Be the kind of person or friend you would want others to be for you.

13) There are a lot of dementors out there. People that will suck the life right out of you. People that will take advantage of you. They will do everything in their power to see you hurt or even try to destroy you in all kinds mean and evil ways. Learn to forgive and move on. Learn the lesion they were sent to teach you. Never make that mistake again. Cut them out of your life. Your circle of influence and trust is much smaller but stronger and better without those types of people in your life. 

 Surround yourself with the 1,000 mile friends. Those people who are there for you through thick and thin. No matter what! You can count on them to have your back and be there for you. Do not let the negative people in your life dictate how you feel, think about yourself or disrupt your inner peace. Excuse them from your life with love and gratitude for the lesson learned. It is never too late to say “I am sorry” or “I forgive you”.

14) It is never a bad day when you are doing what you love to do! It’s never a bad day to be on surf board!

15) Love with all your heart might and sole! Make passionate love to one you love! Live life in the moment. The here. The now. For it is all you have! You cannot live in the past or future. All you have is right now! Yes, set goals and be disciplined. Love yourself enough to pursue that which brings strong physical mental and spiritual health. 

 Live life! Love Life! Saver Life! JUST BE! Be in the moment! Just be!

16) Sometimes you need to wait and be patient. The wave will come. Give it time! Just wait. Be in the moment. Feel the ocean under your board. Then paddle paddle, paddled some more! Count to eight. On the eighth paddle jump up land on the board catch the wave. To get up you first must have momentum. Speed! Then balance! Then focus. Always looking up and forward. Do not look down! Do not look back! Where you are looking (what you are thinking about) is where you are going to go! Then just let go! Feel the power of the wave! It is so easy! In that moment life becomes so genital. It's like an invisible force of nature pushing you through the water! Jump off and the ride is over. The cycle begins all over again. Work rest focus relax ride the natural forces. Repeat. Success! 

 This is how I live! Wait, be patient get quiet gain momentum while always keeping balance! Don't look back always forward! Enjoying every moment every success and every failure, be just be! There on your board of life taking it all in! Be happy. Be humble and be grateful! 

 It truly is the purely simple things in life that makes us the most happy! The pursuit of the simple will make you the happiest and most successful beyond your wildest dreams! 

 When you are Growing and Giving you are ALIVE. When you are Alive you are making Progress!  When you are making Progress,  You are HAPPY!

Mom's Advice: Get It done Son!

Mom's! This pandemic has taught me so much about people.  More important, it has taught me so much about myself.  Now living in this new world, I keep reflecting back on some of the biggest lessons I have learned.  My biggest support and foundation going through tough times has been my mother(s).   If you take a close look at the photos's I have used in the blog, there is a woman in the ocean just behind the young boy.  This beautiful brave person is his mother.  She took him out into the surf of one of the most aggressive surfing breaks on Maui.  She swam him out into the surf.  Always the protector.  The Momma Bear.  She gave him a safe space to go after his dream to surf.  She let go!  She set him free! It reminded how many times my mother did that for me.  She was always in the back ground.  She was willing to watch me go after my dreams.  Willing to let me fail.  Always ready to be there as the lifeguard  if I started to drown.   Before I get too far,  I nee

Why I Serve

"Life is Suffering" I am grateful for the system of Unbeatable Mind.  Mark Divine put it together to get people through the toughest training on the planet.  BUDS! (Is Mark a poser? Or the real deal). He gave me the tools. I did the work. It was always up to me.  What it boils down to is what Buddha taught.....life is suffering.  When you let go, you understand it’s ok to suffer.  Get calm, get in your own head.  Get really quiet.  You gain an internal knowing.  I got this!  It’s going to be ok.  It’s the Big 4 (Breathe, Positive Attitude, Micro Goals, Envision Success).  Then you are at peace.  Peace overflows. You are at first alone. Then with fellow sufferers. You serve yourself.  You serve your Swim buddy (your inner circle), your Ohana (your family).  Your tribe.  The world.  This is the flow state in its purest form.  You give, the universe gives back in spades. Find Peace Under The Wave

"The wise person not choosing to jump into floodwaters, but when surrounded by them, accepting struggle, endure by choosing peace over war".   Seneca, Moral Letters, 28.7 This is surfing.  Actually this is Life!  Paddling into big waves. Just relax, go with the flow of the ocean, duck dive under the wave avoiding the full power and negative forces.  By changing your perception of your position, you avoid the trauma of the negative energy crashing down on you.  You save yourself from the pain of being rolled.  Avoiding the possibility finding yourself  pinned to the bottom of the ocean.   Duck diving, you find yourself at peace under the wave surrounded by the peaceful silence of submersion. The wave passes over head.  You arise to keep moving forward without loss of position.  You can do this in life.  When you identify the waves (drama)  of life are about to crash down on you, take a breath.  Duck dive.  Arise.  Continuing  to move with positive momentum. Ducks and Eagles

The Duck Pond “The Easy Path leads to the Hard Life, The Hard Path leads to the Easy Life”  Rilke Are you a Duck?  Are you and Eagle?  Are you a Eagle convinced you are a Duck? Ducks: Live in the the Duck Pond. Ducks keep repeating the same thing again and again getting the same results.  They  swim around the pond constantly complaining "Nothing in my life every changes".  The negative Nellie.   They do just what is asked. Never go the extra mile.  They complain "quack" to everyone how unfair life is.  They live within their comfort zone.  The place of cozy and familiar.  They don't realize this is a sweet poison silently killing their inner Soul.  We have all had that waiter or person behind the counter who is rude and can not or will not help you because of "this" or "that" reason.  That is a Duck! My Living Room My Wall, Putting the SOCIAL back in Social Media

                                "My Wall, My Rules" Several weeks ago a close friend of mine called to check in.  He is a physician.  A wise man I have known for  over 30 years.  We started talking about Social Media and how it has changed and altered our lives.   One concern we both shared is the lack of respect people show each other on social media.  I am the first to admit I have been guilty.   He then shared some wise advice.  He said "Think of your Facebook wall as your living room and give the same respect to others".   He went on to say "If someone posts something you disagree with or it offends you, on their wall ,  say to yourself what you wanted to post and move-swipe on".    If you find a post positive or you like it, Like It.  Even take the time to say something supportive or positive.  In other words use self control.  Be positive.  Be kind.  Sometimes it is better to be kind than right. The Walk

Once upon a time, not too long ago, a Father and son set off for a walk.  It was the end of the day and the sun was beginning to set.  They headed for their favorite spot on a local beach.  When they arrived they could see the sun on the horizon kissing the water with brilliant yellows and burring oranges.  The water answered back with reflecting colors of deep blues and majestic purples.  They sat themselves down in the cool sand to take in the site. After a few minutes the father turned to his son and asked "Son, when you look at the mountains behind us, what do you see?". His son thought for a time and then said "I see large fields to run and play in.  I see trees to climb and wild life to chase.  I see mountains covered in snow for me to ski down.  That is what I see when I look at the mountains behind us". The Tim Farris Pod Cast is one of my go to pod cast that I listened to going to work each day.  Tim   Asked former Navy SEAL Jaco ( Jaco Willink ) take his is place while he was on vacation.  He was addressing topics like what brings on change? How to  be successful in creating positive change.   His take away from BUDS training  was you change  Right here !  You change  Right now ! You just do not sit around and wait for  change.  You  don't say “I'll do that tomorrow”. The intention is always good.  This almost always lacks follow-through.  If preparatory efforts are not made with an organizational plan set in place, it almost always leads to disorganization, failure and you are right back into your comfort zone.  It must occur instantly in the moment of Right Here Right Now

Simplify "A Hero's Journey"

" I went to Medical school to help myself and others live the best and healthiest lives possible.  The day I started Medical School was the day I started  down the path of dis-Health or Disease (Diss Ease) .  So what is a Hero's Journey?  Why not just become "Enlightened"?  Practice Mindfulness? Attitude of Gratitude "1,000 Thank Yous"

"Mahalo Ke Akua" Mahalo "Thank You".  Ke Akua, "God". Thank you for the clean air that I breath, the fresh water  I drink, the healthy food I eat and the roof over my head.  Most importantly, Thank You for all the wonderful loving people that  have been in my life, currently in my life and  who will come into my life!
