40 Days A Son's Wisdom

  "40 Days" Recently my son Scott and I are sitting in the back yard taking in the stars. Spending  time together.  A great way to close the day.   Cold Beers in hand he starts asking me questions.   "Dad, How old are you now?".  "So, What is the average life expectancy of a man in the United States today?"  I start thinking  "where is this going?'.   Knowing how smart he is and how intuitive he is I start thinking this is going to go deep.  So, Dad.  "How many days/experiences have we had this year together?"  "Two" I answered. He then does some simple math.  If you live to the average age of 75 years of age, that calculates to  on average you have 20 years left.  We spent 2 days together this year.  That totals 40 days. Attitude of Gratitude "1,000 Thank Yous"

"Mahalo Ke Akua" Mahalo "Thank You".  Ke Akua, "God". Thank you for the clean air that I breath, the fresh water  I drink, the healthy food I eat and the roof over my head.  Most importantly, Thank You for all the wonderful loving people that  have been in my life, currently in my life and  who will come into my life! Mom's Advice: Get It done Son!

Mom's! This pandemic has taught me so much about people.  More important, it has taught me so much about myself.  Now living in this new world, I keep reflecting back on some of the biggest lessons I have learned.  My biggest support and foundation going through tough times has been my mother(s).   If you take a close look at the photos's I have used in the blog, there is a woman in the ocean just behind the young boy.  This beautiful brave person is his mother.  She took him out into the surf of one of the most aggressive surfing breaks on Maui.  She swam him out into the surf.  Always the protector.  The Momma Bear.  She gave him a safe space to go after his dream to surf.  She let go!  She set him free! It reminded how many times my mother did that for me.  She was always in the back ground.  She was willing to watch me go after my dreams.  Willing to let me fail.  Always ready to be there as the lifeguard  if I started to drown.   Before I get too far,  I nee

Peace We all have an energy we bring into our daily life.  It is a presence.  The space you take up.  Whether you know it or not you send out a personal energy into the world around you.  This energy is felt by thoses around you.    It can be through body language.  How you stand.  Look at someone.  Walk into a room.  Where you choose to stand or sit in the room.  How you carry yourself.  The words you choose.  The volume and tone of your voice. .  How you listen.  How you respond.  Or not respond. The spoken and the unspoken language sends a message into the world.  Create an internal environment to bring Peace into the world.  Be a presence of calm.  Warmth.  Love.  Total Self Confidence. Create a positive internal environment to reflect outward. Seek a deep spiritual connection to your surroundings. Ducks and Eagles

The Duck Pond “The Easy Path leads to the Hard Life, The Hard Path leads to the Easy Life”  Rilke Are you a Duck?  Are you and Eagle?  Are you a Eagle convinced you are a Duck? Ducks: Live in the the Duck Pond. Ducks keep repeating the same thing again and again getting the same results.  They  swim around the pond constantly complaining "Nothing in my life every changes".  The negative Nellie.   They do just what is asked. Never go the extra mile.  They complain "quack" to everyone how unfair life is.  They live within their comfort zone.  The place of cozy and familiar.  They don't realize this is a sweet poison silently killing their inner Soul.  We have all had that waiter or person behind the counter who is rude and can not or will not help you because of "this" or "that" reason.  That is a Duck! So I checked the dictionary: To be (a) Brave: “ready to face and endure danger or pain; showing courage.” endure or face (unpleasant conditions or behavior) without showing fear. Google what does the word Brave mean? having or showing mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty : having or showing courage a brave soldier a brave smile. This is how I saw/see us? No? Is this not who we are? When you refer to me as an Native American Brave I consider it highest of honors. A show of respect! “We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.” — Dalai Lama Funny thing manure.  It has a smell that can be down right over powering!  You immediately recognizing it when you smell it.  I was once told by a General Surgeon if you don't know Shit don't mess with it.  What he was referring to was the bowel.  If you can't fix the  issue you may find yourself  operating on, leave it to the ones who know what they are doing.  For me as a Gynecological Surgeon it meant to stay in my zip code, the pelvis when operating.  Good advice.  Stay away from shit!   In life maybe there is similar advise we should heed.    We have those people in our lives that are constantly negative. The Tim Farris Pod Cast is one of my go to pod cast that I listened to going to work each day.  Tim   Asked former Navy SEAL Jaco ( Jaco Willink ) take his is place while he was on vacation.  He was addressing topics like what brings on change? How to  be successful in creating positive change.   His take away from BUDS training  was you change  Right here !  You change  Right now ! You just do not sit around and wait for  change.  You  don't say “I'll do that tomorrow”. The intention is always good.  This almost always lacks follow-through.  If preparatory efforts are not made with an organizational plan set in place, it almost always leads to disorganization, failure and you are right back into your comfort zone.  It must occur instantly in the moment of Right Here Right Now

My Living Room My Wall, Putting the SOCIAL back in Social Media

                                "My Wall, My Rules" Several weeks ago a close friend of mine called to check in.  He is a physician.  A wise man I have known for  over 30 years.  We started talking about Social Media and how it has changed and altered our lives.   One concern we both shared is the lack of respect people show each other on social media.  I am the first to admit I have been guilty.   He then shared some wise advice.  He said "Think of your Facebook wall as your living room and give the same respect to others".   He went on to say "If someone posts something you disagree with or it offends you, on their wall ,  say to yourself what you wanted to post and move-swipe on".    If you find a post positive or you like it, Like It.  Even take the time to say something supportive or positive.  In other words use self control.  Be positive.  Be kind.  Sometimes it is better to be kind than right.
